この行列に、縄は出てこない。鎖も枷もない。日本の三つの時代の暮らしの決まりごと——額入りの家訓、回覧板、自動改札、ポケベル、赤い通知バッジ、際限のないスクロール——から生まれた創作妖怪百体が、それぞれ自分の身体で縛る。三枚の舌、紙札のうろこ、算盤玉の背骨、長い黒髪、根、膜、触手。
中心にいるのは、首に小さな赤い鈴を下げた娘・鈴音。図壱では、家訓舌婆(かくんじたばば)がすでに彼女の肩へ舌を巻きつけている——彼女はまだ気づいてもいない。図が進むごとに彼女の表情は変わっていく。気づいていない顔、睨み返す顔、絡みの向きを静かに読む顔、嫌がりながら頬だけ赤くなる顔。縛りはめったに酷くはない。決まりごとが誰しもを縛るのと同じやり方で、彼女を正し、留め、その晩を終わらせまいとするだけである。
図九十九、圏外の窓に射す朝の光で縛りはゆるむ。だが百図目には「絡み世」が待っている——三つの時代の舌・翼・根・糸をすべて身にまとった、ひとつの大きな妖怪である。最後にほどけるのが縛りそのものなのか、それとも女自身なのか、それは最後の一枚をめくった者だけが知る。
妖怪百体はすべて作家の創作。縛るのは常に妖怪自身の生きた身体——縄や器具は使わない
No rope appears in this night parade. No chains, no shackles. One hundred invented yōkai — born from the rules of three eras of Japanese life, from the framed family precepts and the neighborhood circular board to magnetic ticket gates and pagers, to the red notification badge and the endless scroll — and each one binds with its own body: three brush-tongues, scales of paper tags, a spine of abacus beads, long black hair, root, membrane, tentacle.
At the center is Suzune, the girl with a small red bell at her throat. On the first plate, the Precept-Tongue Crone has already wound its tongues around her shoulders — and she hasn't even noticed yet. Plate by plate her expression changes: not yet noticing, glaring back, calmly reading the direction of the coil, disgusted yet blushing only at the cheeks. The bindings are rarely cruel — they hold her the way rules hold everyone: to correct her, to keep her, to not let the evening end.
At plate ninety-nine, the bindings loosen in the morning light of an out-of-signal window. But on the hundredth plate waits Karamiyo, the Entangled World — one great yōkai wearing every tongue, wing, root and strand of the three eras at once. Whether what comes undone at the end is the binding or the woman herself, only the one who turns the last page will know.
All one hundred yōkai are the artist's original creations; the binding is always the yōkai's own living body — never ropes, never gear
