瓦斯灯、電信線、汽車、活動写真、カフェー、ラヂオ。明治と大正の町へ舶来の光と音が入り、古い器物の隣で、まだ名のない気配が生まれた。神と呼ぶには新しく、機械と呼ぶには寂しすぎる、百のものたちである。
写真師・谷内鈴音は、喉元の小さな赤い鈴とともに、その気配を一枚ずつ写し取った。文明開化から大正の終わりまで、暮らしを変えた発明と、変わりゆく町に置き去りにされた声をたどる百枚の記録である。
百番目の古鈴が鳴るとき、新しさの陰に忘れられた灯り、手紙、足音、ぬくもりが、ふたたび夜の列へ戻ってくる。返されるのは、明治と大正、二つの時代である。
Gaslight, telegraph wires, trains, motion pictures, cafés, and radio brought foreign light and sound into the streets of Meiji and Taishō Japan. Beside familiar old objects, presences without names began to stir: too new to be gods, too lonely to be merely machines.
Suzune Taniuchi, a photographer with a small red bell at her throat, recorded them one plate at a time. These one hundred images follow the inventions that transformed daily life—and the voices left behind by a changing city—from the dawn of modern Japan to the end of the Taishō era.
When the old bell in the hundredth plate rings, lights, letters, footsteps, and warmth forgotten in the shadow of progress return to the night parade. What comes back is not one age, but two: Meiji and Taishō.
